"And more ink from my pen and more tears from eyes
And more crimes are committed as I say these lines..."
- Flowin' Prose, Hello Nasty, vocals by Adam Yauch
Adam's death marks the saddest day in music history for me. I have loved and admired the Beastie Boys (my no. 1 band for fifteen years of my life). All my friends will attest to that. They were the ultimate in cool and they had a great sense of humour, but they were also the ultimate in being ethical.
I am incredibly saddened by Adam Yauch's death. I really LOVED that guy. He was one of the biggest inspirations to me in the visual and musical arts. He was also a great role model to me growing up, spiritually and as an activist because he spoke up for so many issues that weren't his own- women's rights, islamophobia and the Chinese' occupation of Tibet. I have unfortunately never met or seen the Beasties live on stage and I was hoping to, but now I will never get the chance. There are people whom I listen to and love, but Adam and the Beasties were in a league of their own. No band can do what the Beasties did, not now or ever. And Adam Y was just the pinnacle of being the best at everything in his life. It makes me cry that he is no more. He is right up there as one of my biggest role models next to his fellow Beasties and one of the Beasties' wives: Kathleen Hanna. And it makes me proud that he is one of those musicians who died fighting, not from an unnecessary addiction or suicide.
Adam Yauch will be missed. Badly, sorely and the world isn't complete without him.
As he passes on to the next world, I just hope that this world remembers his legacy not by his Fight for your Right Days, and not by supposedly inspiring people like (yuck) Eminem.
Much Love to you dear MCA, it is true what they say--the good really die young.
